Hello! I'm pleased to say that I have a little bit of progress to update this blog with.
1. I officially joined the gym! There's a Planet Fitness about 2 miles from my house that seems pretty cool. Everything in there is purple or yellow! I'll go work out there for the first time tomorrow. I still haven't started tracking my calories...oops.
2. I've been practicing the skateboard. I'm good enough to skate all the way down the driveway...if I stop at the huge crack in the middle. If I don't stop intentionally at that point, I'll sure stop unintentionally. At least, the skateboard will stop, while I go flying forward. Ask me how I found that out. I need a better place to practice.
3. My room is *almost* clean. Another day or two of organizing and I'm set.
4. Another goal that didn't make it onto my original list is getting my dog healthy again. His name's Scoop, he's ten years old and he has terrible allergies. Like all year round, absolutely miserable without treatment allergies. And the past few weeks have been especially bad. His skin's been super itchy and he's been coughing. But I took him to the vet today and got him a prescription. And we cut his hair really short yesterday to try to help with the itching. So yay, hopefully this is another goal accomplished.
5. Haven't worked any more on my resume or getting a job. *sigh*
That's all I've got for now!
The Summer of Marshall

Goals
To paraphrase George Costanza, IT'S THE SUMMER OF MARSHALL!
Let me start by introducing myself: My name's Marshall and I just finished my first year of college. Which means summer break is FINALLY here, and with it, four whole months of no cramming for exams, no waking up for 8 am classes, no walking to class in the rain, and no obnoxious downstairs neighbor playing his guitar and singing badly at all hours of the night. I'm back to living with the parents and eating real food instead of ramen noodles.
My usual summer break plan involves sitting on my ass, trying half-heartedly (and failing) to get a job, playing far too many computer games, and eating too much junk food.
This summer break, I'm hoping things will be a little bit different. I have some specific goals that I want to will accomplish this summer. Some of my goals are serious and important, others are frivolous, some are short term, others long term. But I want to commit to all of them.
This blog will hopefully act as a contract with myself to actually get off my ass and get stuff DONE.
Without further ado, the goals:
1. Get a job. I don't want to because I'm lazy. I need to because I'm poor and I actually want to be able to afford food after buying the mountains of textbooks I'll have to buy for next semester. Not only that, but if I actually want to get into pharmacy school, some pharmacy technician experience would be invaluable.
Progress on this goal so far: I have completed the online part of the Walgreen's application and started a resume.
Next step: Finish resume, go to Walgreen's in person to continue application.
2. Lose weight. I am significantly overweight and in the interest of my health, this needs to change. Since the beginning of 2011, I have already lost a little bit of weight, about 10 pounds, but I need to lose a lot more to be in the "normal" BMI range. I'm not too worried about the numbers, but I need to be healthier.
Current Weight: 230 lbs (according to the home scale, which I'm pretty sure reads about 10 lbs lighter than my actual weight. I will verify this once I find an accurate scale)
Pants size: 20-22
Bust measurement: 48
Waist measurement: 41
Hip measurement: 50
Goal: Pants size of 14 by the end of the summer.
Next step: Sign up for a membership at the gym, track calories at Livestrong.com
3. Learn to skateboard. All year long, I saw the skateboarders zip around campus and was jealous of their fun and efficient mode of transportation. And every time, I thought "Man, it would be so cool to skateboard around campus. Too bad I would look like an idiot if I tried." I was so worried about people pointing and laughing at the fat girl on the skateboard.
Then, one day, I had an epiphany. Who the fuck cares? Life's too damn short to worry about looking ridiculous. I really want to be able to skateboard, and damnit, I'm going to learn how to skateboard.
Progress: My brother gave me his (never used) skateboard, and I took it for a spin for the first time today. The good news is that I don't completely suck at it! By the end of today, I could skate all the way down my driveway (which is on a hill), and could kinda make it back up, but the board kept veering to the right. Not sure if that's me, or the board.
Next step: Find a big open area like an empty parking lot to practice in. Learn how to turn. Contact my skater cousin for pointers.
4. Unpack all the dorm stuff. My room is a wreck right now with all of the stuff I moved out of my dorm. It really needs to be taken care of and put up or packed away carefully for next year.
Progress: Some of the stuff, like most of the clothes and all of the food and dishes are already put up.
Next step: finish this goal by the end of this week.
5. Do at least 40 pushups and 40 situps a day. They can be all at once or separated into sets, but NO EXCEPTIONS. 40 a day.
6. Keep in touch with friends. Usually, my group of friends let ourselves slip out of touch over the summer, but I want to resolve to at least one get-together every two weeks.
7. Study Spanish. I haven't yet figured out how I am going to do this, but I really need to brush up on my Spanish. After my Junior year of high school, I was damn near fluent. One absolutely terrible Spanish literature teacher and a year of college with zero Spanish studying later, I'm losing it at a rapid pace. I need to prevent years of Spanish classes from going to waste.
Next step: figure out a way to study Spanish. Online lectures? Reading novels in Spanish? Finding a pen pal? Telenovelas?
More may come to me later, but I think this is a pretty good list for now. I will update regularly on my progress. I'm not actually expecting anyone to read this blog, but if you do, would you please leave me a comment to let me know you're out there? Maybe offer a little moral support? I would appreciate it ever so much.
